Burial Flags

You need a DEERS account to get VA benefit letters to apply for property tax relief (disabled 30% or more) or to get a Uniformed Services ID Card if you are 100% disabled.

If you qualify for a Uniformed Services ID card, then you need to go through DEERS to get one. For 100% disabled veterans, this card provides access to Morale, Welfare and Recreation resources at military bases. To get such a card, you need to get appropriate documentation and go to a local DEERS or military ID card location. For a 100% disabled veteran, that is a VA benfits letter show your 100% disability.

The mission of the Veterans Assistance Commission of DuPage County, Illinois, 421 N County Farm Rd (in the rear of the second floor cafeteria, adjacent to the Illinois State Veterans Service Officer), Wheaton, IL 60187, +1-630-407-5655, is to provide emergency financial assistance to eligible, indigent veterans and their families. Honorably discharged Veterans with at least 181 day of active fedral duty who fall within income limits may be eligible for assistance. To seek first to understand and to improve the economic well being and quality of life for the veterans of DuPage County, who have served our country honorably, in the Armed Forces of the United States. The VAC also provides non-financial services and seeks to identify and provide for other needs that Veterans and their families may have.

 Col Robert R. McCormick, owner of the Chicago Tribune (the World's Greatest Newspaper per its masthead) and of WGN radio and TV  bequested his estate to be a public park. This is the Cantigny Park and Golf of today. He was one of the many founders of the American Legion. He was instrumental in the founding of the Medill-Tribune Post 348 at the newspaper and of First Division Cantigny Post 556 at his estate. Cantigny Park is still Post 556's post home.

For honorably discharged veterans and currenty serving service people: The Cantigny Park Honor Club provides significant benefits and it's free.

 [Col Robert R. McCormick] took part in the capture of Cantigny, after which he named his farm estate in Wheaton, Illinois, and in the battles of Soissons, Saint-Mihiel, and the second phase of the Argonne. He served in the 1st Battalion, 5th Field Artillery Regiment, with the 1st Infantry Division. His service ended on December 31, 1918, though he remained a part of the Officers Reserve Corps from October 8, 1919 to September 30, 1929. Cited for prompt action in battle, he received the Distinguished Service Medal. Colonel McCormick provided an endowment for the First Division Museum, which was designed by architect Andrew Rebori. The museum has exhibits and artifacts chronicling the First Division's service history, not only in World War I, but also in World War II and later U.S. wars.

The Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs offers Services Offices and Officers, State Programs and State Benefits. Working with businesses, a list of businesses offering discounts is available. Veteran designation on driver's license or state id is available. Survivor and burial assistance is available. Illinois has four Veteran Homes.
